Dear Students and Staff,
I am saddened to inform you of the passing of Dr Chng Pheng Lui of the Business School yesterday evening, 25 April 2003.
At this time, the cause of Dr Chng's death has not been determined. We know that he was feeling unwell from 11 April and subsequently developed a sore throat and fever
Although we do not yet know the cause of death, given the SARS situation, we have taken immediate precautionary measures as follows:
a) disinfection of Business School and its canteen
b) emails from Dean of Business School to his staff and students
c) contact tracing covering the period from 11 April onwards
If you have been in contact with Dr Chng from 11 April onwards, please call the NUS hotline at 6874 6288. In the meantime, please stay home, monitor your temperature and await further instructions. You may wish to know that based on the information we have, Dr Chng was last at NUS when he came into his office at Business School on Thursday, 17 April.
I will continue to provide more information as it becomes available. Updates will also be posted at www.nus.edu.sg/sars
.
In the meantime, I urge our NUS community to observe the prescribed precautionary measures against SARS.

of the sacrifice?
The Praying Hands
story as retold by Elf...
A long long time ago, in a small mining village in france, lived two brothers, they were both talented artists but their family was poor and their father could only afford to send one of them to art school in paris, so the 2 brothers tossed a coin and the elder brother got to go, while the younger brother stayed behind to help his father out in the mines to earn money to put older brother thru art school.
Eventually, the older brother got rich and famous as an artist and he returned to a hero's welcome in his little village. That night he came back, there was a huge feast held by the villagers to celebrate the prodigal son's return. Sitting at the table, the older brother held his younger brother's hands in his, and happily and proudly declared " my dear brother, u no longer have to toil in the coal mines, i'm earning more than enough money now, it's time for you to go to art school "
The younger brother smiled at his older brother and said " oh dear brother.. in the years i have worked with father in the mines, i have broken every single finger in both my hands, i can barely hold a shovel now, not least a paint brush "
With that the older bro looked down at his younger brothers hands clasped in his and saw his younger brother's distorted and disfigured hands, and he clutched them tight and he wept and he wept. That night, he painted a picture of his younger brother's broken hands clasped in prayer and since that day, the tatoo of the praying hands have come to symbolize and celebrate the love between the brothers, and that of ultimate sacrifice..
Next month, when my worldly chores (read:exams) are done with, i will get the praying hands inked on my right arm, as a tribute to those who have touched my life in their own little ways once before, those who have given up one piece of their lives, so i can live mine a litter better...
goodnight everyone..

of the handprints?
~ Handprints ~
" And so shalt these prints remain,
Subtly etched in sand,
in time,
in mind.
Until the next tide,
washes ashore... "
- Elf
Sep 23, 2001
This is a re-print. Dedicated to someone who's hard at work right now. Someone who watched a movie with me last friday and we were talking and she asked if some alien invaded my body, what would be the one thing she can ask me so me and only me knows. And i told her "Handprints"
This is dedicated to someone who woke up on that fateful saturday morning at 6am to go watch my very 1st sunrise of my life with me at Changi beach... someone who sat with me on tha beach and left her handprint next to mine in the sand and wrote my name below it... we didnt see tha sunrise that morning... and the prata at the changi village hawker center wasnt super fantastic... and we had to rush back to skoo for her class... and those handprints have probably been long washed up by the upcomin tide.. yet in my life now and here, she stays. This is a reminder, to myself, that never a day should i let pass without thanking god she's here. I love You Darl. ~

of the deadline?
-*the original entry was somehow deleted by blogger, but it reached its intended receipient, of whom i kept in mind while writing that entry. And like the other 20 million signs the universe shows us each day, maybe that is the way it was meant to be. to be deleted just right after it was read. Amen~*-

of the luuuuurve?
Everybody say AWWWWWWWWWwwwwwwww... my stupid bro came home tonite while i was watchin soccer and asked me into his room, and he took out this red bag and gave it to me, sayin it's my super belated bday present (my birthday is in oct by the way, hint hint) and i took it out and saw this bobbing-head optimus prime. I've been a transformers fan since a kid and he said he saw it in this comic book shop and knew it was just right for me.
ok lemme explain, me and my bro share this weird relationship, we're not like chummy chummy kinda thing, we normally just grunt stuff to each other like " eh siao.. pass the remote... " we kinda function on this weirdass sublimal level, yet we know we will come thru for the other person when there is real need. Like the night before he enlisted into army, i wrote him this letter, sharing with him how the experience was like for me, and to ask him to make the best of it. A twisted form of brotherly love? perhapse, so this gesture was extremly heart warming. Stupid boy got his posting last sat and he's going to the skoo of signals 2molo. Hope he makes it good there. I'm displaying the optimus on top of my comp, the most strategic place in my room. everybody say AWWWWWWWWwwwwwww again pls...
sumtimes, amidst this crazy life we live, all we need, is a little luuuurrve, spread a little of it around too won't u ? 8)

of the virus?
it's amazing how much hype the SARS thingie has created, the closest relation i've got to me now is that tomorrow NUS Is gonna have a forum at 630pm to discuss if we shld postpone NUS exams. I'm definately gonna vote "NO". The pressure on the student's union is cause NTU is gonna postpone exams for 2 weeks and all the NUS people are sayin "how come ntu have we don't have"
Jesus, NTU people jump u wanna jump anot?? my goodness... those who want the postponement cannot even justify why they want it. SARS is probably the last thing on their minds, all they are looking at is so they can have more time to study, which is not the issue at all!!! I really cannot see how postponing exams for 2 weeks can help in controlling or containing the SARS thingie, I sure hope the university doesnt crumble to the insistence of these selfish people. On another note, if the exams ARE postponed, this will directly affect my attachment, which is due to start right after the exams, from 5th may till like 4th july, if we push that back 2 weeks, once my attachment ends, the next skool term will start.. bummer. Let's see wat happens 2molo...
On another note, my classmate Eileen is gonna set up her site at http://one.forgottentouch.com Me being the generous nice guy i am decided to host her, so Eileen if u are reading this, i'm gonna be expectin sweets during our tutorials next sem. 8)
Stay healthy people. later~
